HDR Grand Canyon National Park Arizona Colorado
  • You can visit the Grand Canyon from the north of the canyon (North Rim) or the South (South Rim). The northern rim is 365 metres (1200 ft) higher than the southern rim.
  • If it is your first visit to Grand Canyon National Park and/or you are travelling with children, you’ll most likely want to visit the South Rim for its relative abundance of hotels, services and activities. Grand Canyon South Rim is open year-round, making it the best choice for a wintertime visit.
  • Grand Canyon North Rim, which is only open from mid-May through mid-October, is better suited to couples, hikers and those seeking a quieter experience.

  • Inside the National Park you can move around the many viewpoints using the shuttle bus. There are several lines and if you want to see them all, it will take you one day at least  .

  • If you want to know the Canyon closer and fully appreciate the scale of the Canyon, you can take one of the hiking trails. But keep in mind that some of them are long, specially if they go from the top all the way down to the river. It will take twice the time to hike out of the canyon that it will to hike down.
  • In Summer plan the hike very early, and I mean VERY early. The reason is to finish the hike before the hottest hours of the day so that you don't get caught at midday in the middle of the hike. There are not trees or anything to protect against the sun and the ground in Summer can heat up above 43 degrees Celsius (110 F). Don't forget to bring water with you even for short hikes. There are many signs around the park warning that there have been some casualties in the past years because of dehydration.

  • If you don't have much time, a good option can be taking one of the helicopter or plane tours that allow you to enjoy some amazing views the Canyon from a privileged place. The massive heat coming up from the Canyon can provoke serious turbulences. Be aware!

  • If you stay longer, plan some Grand Canyon tours or activities like mule rides, Colorado River rafting trips, 4x4 safari-jeep tours or ranger-guided activities.
